Abstract

Sedimentation, screen clogging and rusting of ferrous metals is prevented in oils such as distillate fuel oils and mineral lubricating oils by addition thereto of amic acids of the formula RHN-CO-R1-COOH, or a salt thereof with an amine R.NH2, wherein R is a C4-30 saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R1 is -CH2.CH2-or -CH:CH-. Quantities of additive between 1 and 200 pounds per thousand barrels of oil or between 0,001 and 10% by weight are preferred. In fuel oils the additives may be used in conjunction with foam inhibitors and ignition and burning quality improvers, e.g. silicones, dinitropropane, amyl nitrate and metal sulphonates. In lubricating oils the additives may be used in conjunction with antioxidants, pour point depressants, viscosity index improvers and E.P. agents.ALSO:Amic acids of the formula RHN1CO.R1.COOH in which R1 is -CH2.CH2- or -CH : CH-and R is a C4-30 monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical are prepared by reaction between equimolar amounts of an acid R1.(COOH)2 or the corresponding anhydride and an amine of the formula R.NH2. A further proportion of the amine RNH2 may be subsequently reacted with the product to produce an amine salt of the formula RHN.CO.R1.COOH,RNH2. The amine RNH2 may be saturated or unsaturated and preferably contains a tertiary carbon atom adjacent to the amine-nitrogen atom.
