Abstract

1,140,171. Succinamic acid derivatives. CHEVRON RESEARCH CO. 27 Jan., 1967 [7 Feb., 1966; 14 Sept., 1966], No. 4217/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Novel C-(n-aliphatic hydrocarbyl)-succinamic acids having a total of at least 50 carbon atoms, wherein the nitrogen of the carboxamide is disubstituted with aliphatic hydrocarbon substituents each of which has at least 14 carbon atoms and the C-substituent has at least 14 carbon atoms and is bonded to the succinoyl group of the succinamic acid at other than a terminal carbon atom, are prepared by reacting an alkyl or alkenyl succinic anhydride with the desired secondary amine at a temperature in the range of 150‹ to 250‹ F. in approximately equimolar amounts. The acids may be represented by the formula where R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl or alkenyl containing at least 14 C atoms, one of A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>2</SP> is hydroxyl and the other is -NB<SP>1</SP>B<SP>2</SP> where B<SP>1</SP> and B<SP>2</SP> are aliphatic hydrocarbyl groups of from 14 to 28 carbon atoms, each acid containing at least 50 carbon atoms. The acids are pour point depressants and may be used by themselves or in combination with up to 50% of a copolymer of ethylene and propylene having a molecular weight of from 1000 to 100,000.
