Abstract

Hydrocarbon fuel oils contain up to 1.0% by weight of branched chain ethylene polymers having molecular weights determined by the Rast method between 700 and 1500, as pour point depressants. The ethylene polymer is a polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, and preferably has 3 to 5 carbon atoms in side chains per 100 carbon atoms. The fuel oil may be kerosene, heavy naphtha, turbo-jet fuel, diesel oil, gas oil or a heating oil. In examples gas oil contains branched chain ethylene polymers and copolymers of ethylene and propylene. Other polymers are mentioned for comparison.
