Abstract

A hydrocarbon fuel composition comprises a fuel oil and, as pour point depressant, from 0.001 to 3% by weight of an oxidized, degraded ethylene/propylene interpolymer which has been prepared by bubbling an oxygen-containing gas (e.g. air) through a solution of an ethylene/propylene interpolymer of M.W. from 50,000 to 800,000 for a time sufficient to reduce the M.W. to within the range from 3000 to a value 5% less than the original M.W., the polymer solvent being diphenyl oxide/biphenyl or diphenyl oxide alone. The interpolymer may include a minor amount of another hydrocarbon monomer, particularly 1,4-hexadiene. Specified fuel oils are distillate and residual burner oils and diesel oils. Solvents such as kerosene and/or xylene may be utilized in forming concentrates of the depressant.ALSO:An oxidized degraded interpolymer of ethylene and propylene is prepared by bubbling an oxygen-containing gas (e.g. air) through a solution of an ethylene/propylene interpolymer of M.W. from 50,000 to 800,000 for a time sufficient to reduce the M.W. to within the range from 3000 to a value 5% less than the original M.W., the polymer solvent being diphenyl oxide with/ without biphenyl. The interpolymers may include minor amounts of other hydrocarbon monomers. The products find application as pour point additives in fuel oils.
