Abstract

A copolymer of ethylene and propylene is made by reacting the two monomers together in the presence of a Ziegler-type catalyst. The product is said to have a branch index (defined as the total number of non-terminal methyl groups per 100 carbon atoms in the polymer) of 16-19. In a preparation the catalyst used consists of tetraphenyl tin, AlCl3 and VCl4.ALSO:A fuel oil composition comprises a major amount of a distillate fuel oil and at least 0.001% of an oil-soluble non-cross-linked low-density hydrocarbon polyolefin derived from monomers having not more than 6 carbon atoms and having an intrinsic viscosity in the range 0.08-0.15 dl/g., and having a branch index of at least 6. The branch index is defined as the number of non-terminal methyl groups per 100 carbon atoms in the polymer. Fuel oils mentioned include diesel fuel, jet fuel, residual fuel, furnace oil, heater oil, kerosene, and gas oil, and mixtures thereof. Polymers mentioned are polyethylene and ethylene-propylene copolymers. The polymer may be added to the fuel as a concentrate in a suitable solvent, e.g. naphtha, mineral spirits, heater oil, benzene, toluene, xylene, pentane, hexane, or isopropyl alcohol.
