Abstract

A composition for inhibiting corrosion comprises dibutyl thiourea and a compound having the formula: <FORM:0984329/C6-C7/1> e.g. ethoxylated or propoxylated quaternary ammonium compound; where, R=aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having 6-22 carbon atoms, R1=alkylene radical having 2-3 carbon atoms, R11=alkyl radical having 1-3 carbon atoms, X=halogen, and x and y are integers having a sum total varying between 2-50. Corrosion and pitting caused by aqueous solutions of pickling and cleaning acids such as sulphuric, sulfamic, phosphoric, citric &c. acids are thereby prevented. The range of moles for ethylene oxide or propylene oxide in the above quarternary ammonium compounds is 2-50 moles, preferably 2-25 moles. The preferred composition range is 10-50% by weight dibutyl thiourea to 90-50% by weight of the quaternary ammonium compound. The composition may include a dispersant, such as a cationic or non-ionic surface active agent, such as a polyethoxylated fatty acid, or polyethoxylated diamine and has a high flash point of over 340 DEG F. In preparing the composition the quaternary ammonium compound is acidulated with HCl or H2SO4 to a pH of 4.5-5.5 before the dibutyl thiourea with or without dispersant are added, and the mixture heated until the dibutyl thiourea melts, forming a clear liquid dispersible in water, as an inhibitor.
