Abstract

532,661. Pickling ; cleansing compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and HUNT, J. K. April 20, 1939, No. 11936. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group III] A process for cleaning and pickling metal and other surfaces contaminated with rust or other metallic oxides comprises applying to the said surfaces a composition consisting of an aqueous solution of a water-soluble compound containing the sulphamic acid radicle NH 2 SO 3 , e.g. ammonium sulphamate or sulphamic acid. The solution may also include an inhibitor and/or a wetting agent such as alkaline soaps of fatty acids or turkey red oil. The solution may be converted into the form of a paste by adding a bodying agent such as glycerol or colloidal minerals, e.g. clay. Abrasives may also be. added. The paste is applied to the surface to be treated, preferably with a damp cloth. For pickling metals such as copper, brass, iron or steel, solutions of sulphamic acid are used preferably with the addition of an inhibitor such as cinchona bark alkaloid or pyridine derivatives or thioureas. An example of such a bath is one containing ten per cent. by weight of sulphamic acid and 0.025 per cent. by weight of sulphurized quinodine, the temperature of the bath being 150‹F. An example of a paste cleaning composition is one containing 20 parts by weight of Bentonite clay, 30 of water, 2 of octyl alcohol sulphate and 10 of sulphamic acid.
