Abstract
Metallic surfaces are degreased, pickled and passivated by treating them with or within a composition comprising water, an organic solvent miscible with water and having a rather weak degreasing power and (a) a double phosphate of chromium and triethanolamine, or (b) triethanolamine and acid phosphate of chromium, or (c) triethanolamine, phosphoric acid and chromic acid, the pH value of the composition being less than 3.5. The organic solvent may be methyl or ethyl alcohol or pyridine or mixtures thereof. The composition may be formed by adding triethanolamine to the organic solvent, phosphoric and chromic acids dissolved in water being then added in sequence; or chromic acid and zinc carbonate may be dissolved in phosphoric acid, such solution added to triethanolamine in the organic solvent, and water added last. The composition may be allowed to dry on the metal; or, after application, the surface may be gently washed to form a double basic phosphate of chromium and triethanolamine; or it may be thoroughly washed or brushed and subjected to another protective treatment, e.g. painting or anodizing.ALSO:Metallic surfaces are degreased, pickled and passivated by treating them with or within a composition comprising water, an organic solvent mixible with water and having a rather weak degreasing power and (a) a double phosphate of chromium and triethanolamine, or (b) triethanolamine and acid phosphate of chromium, or (c) triethanolamine, phosphoric acid and chromic acid, the pH value of the composition being less than 3.5.
