Abstract
A process of brightening aluminium or alloys thereof consists in immersion for a suitable period in a bath containing phosphoric acid of specific gravity 1.72 with or without a quantity of added water not exceeding 20 per cent by volume of the diluted bath at a temperature adequate to ensure brightening of the surface of the articles being treated. In the bath, sulphuric acid may be included in a proportion not exceeding two parts of sulphuric acid (specific gravity 1.84) to one part of phosphoric acid (specific gravity 1.72). A small proportion of a compound of a metal electronegative to lead may be present in the bath, which metal may be antimony, e.g. in the form of antimony trioxide. After removal from the bath the articles may be allowed to drain so that they are further brightened by the liquid on the surface, and then rinsed in hot water, or in a hot solution containing sulphuric acid and chromic acid, or phosphoric acid and chromic acid, or they may be so rinsed without being allowed to drain.
