Abstract

In a process for the production of corrosion resistant coatings on a metal surface, the surface is immersed in a bath of treating solution, automatic indicating means, responsive to one or more physical constants of the solution, indicating changes in the composition of the bath. The physical constants may be pH value, conductivity or colour and the indicator may operate electric controls to add reagents and maintain the concentration of the bath at the desired value. Oxalate or phosphate baths may be used having a conductivity of 520-540 mhos./cm. x 104 or a pH value of 1.8-2.5 respectively. The indication is stated to achieve a high degree of accuracy particularly when the sludge formed is removed by a continuous filtration process as described in Specification 606,381.
