Abstract

A process for producing a zinc phosphate coating on a metallic surface in which the metallic surface is brought into contact with a solution of zinc primary phosphate at not exceeding 45 DEG C., which solution contains no copper compound and is in equilibrium with zinc tertiary phosphate, i.e., the solution is incapable of dissolving any more tertiary phosphate at the temperature of operation. When the metal surface is zinc, a modified solution is employed, viz., of a primary phosphate other than zinc, e.g. manganese which dissociates to give a solution having not more free phosphoric acid than a solution of zinc primary phosphate of equimolecular strength and at the same temperature. After application the solution may be allowed to dry. The solution may contain one or more oxidizing accelerators and may be treated continuously or intermittently to maintain equilibrium. Equilibrium may be produced or maintained by bringing the solution into intimate contact with the tertiary phosphate of the metal whose primary phosphate it contains. The tertiary phosphate may be in a sludge which has separated from the said solution. In addition to zinc primary phosphate the solution may contain up to two molecular equivalents of another mineral acid salt or salts of zinc per molecular equivalent of zinc primary phosphate. Specification 386,739, [Group II] is referred to.
