Abstract
In the neutralization of solutions or melts of acid calcium nitrate containing phosphate ions, such as obtained on the treatment of raw phosphate with nitric acid, a part of the solution is neutralized with a solution of an inorganic base, e.g. quick lime, calcium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, ammonia, to a pH of at least 2.5, preferably 3.0-3.5, whereupon further neutralization is effected by adding the acid solution and calcium carbonate, preferably continuously, to the preneutralized part of the solution. After neutralization, say to pH 4, the solution may be further neutralized to pH 6 by ammonia. If highly acid calcium nitrate solutions are employed, say of pH=-1, the main part of the free acid may be neutralized to pH 0.5-1.5 with powdered calcium carbonate prior to the addition of the solution of the inorganic base. The calcium carbonate may be added as a suspension in the finally neutralized solution.
