Abstract

A mixed salt of alginic acid having a controlled solubility in water is obtained by treating calcium alginate with a salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, the cations of which are solubilizing so that sufficient calcium ions are exchanged for the solubilizing ions to impart a desired degree of solubility. The solubilizing ions may be alkalimetal such as sodium, or ammonium or magnesium. In an example, 4,000 grams of calcium alginate gauze is mixed with 6 gallons of industrial methylated spirit and 2 1/3 gallons of water, and 3,000 millilitres of a 30% solution of the disodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid is mixed with 1/3 of a gallon of water and the whole then mixed for 20 minutes. The gauze is then rinsed in spirit and dried. Specification 653,341 is referred to.
