Abstract

Sedimentation of solid particles in brines or solutions of electrolytes is accelerated by adding to the solutions a colloidal carob bean flour solution prepared by heating carob bean flour with water to 70 DEG to 130 DEG C., and adding a solution of an electrolyte before, during or after said heating. The flour may be treated with at least one of the electrolytes contained in the brine to be treated. For accelerating the sedimentation of clay in a brine containing potassium and sodium chlorides, carob bean flour solution is treated with a solution containing boric acid, sodium hydroxide and potassium chloride. For a similar purpose or for accelerating the sedimentation of phosphate residues in acid brines containing monocalcium phosphate the carob bean flour solution may be treated with a solution containing boric acid, sodium hydroxide and disodium phosphate.ALSO:Sedimentation of solid particles in brines or solutions of electrolytes is accelerated by adding to the solutions a colloidal carot bean flour solution prepared by heating carot bean flour with water to 70 DEG to 130 DEG C. and adding a solution of an electrolyte before, during, or after the said heating. The added electrolytes which give the best results are stated to be solutions of boric acid and its salts with or without salts of phosphoric acid. In certain cases tannin may be used. The carot bean flour may be treated with at least one of the electrolytes contained in the brine to be treated. The method of the invention may be used in the treatment of colliery waste waters. For accelerating the sedimentation of clay in a brine containing potassium and sodium chlorides, carot bean flour solution has added thereto a solution containing boric acid, sodium hydroxide and potassium chloride. For a similar purpose or for accelerating the sedimentation of phosphate residues in acid brines containing monocalcium phosphate, the added solution may contain boric acid, sodium hydroxide and disodium phosphate.
