615,848. Anodic coating of magnesium and its alloys. HAAG, K. G., and TRAGARDH, A. U. Aug. 15, 1946, No. 24239. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 15, 1946.] [Class 41] A protective surface coating of oxide or hydroxide is produced on a surface of magnesium or its alloys by anodic treatment in alkali hydroxide solutions containing in excess of 250 grams per litre of alkali hydroxide. One or more activating substances for maintaining the active state of the metal during the treatment may be added to the electrolyte. These substances comprise alkali metal salts of acids, the magnesium salts of which are substantially insoluble in water, e.g. carbonic, hydrofluoric, silicic, fluosilicic, boric, phosphoric, ferrocyanic, ferricyanic and formic acids which may be added to the hydroxide bath to produce the salts therein. In a specific example for treating an alloy containing zinc, a mixture of potassium and/or sodium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide is used. A bath containing between 300 and 450 grams per litre of alkali hydroxide is stated to give best results. Alternating or direct current or alternating superimposed on direct current may be employed.
