Abstract
Magnesium base alloys containing aluminium are subjected to the action of an aqueous solution of chromic acid or a salt thereof, another strong acid in a concentration sufficient to maintain the pH value of the solution below 2.0 and hydrofluoric acid or a salt thereof in a proportion corresponding to between 0.06 and 1.7 per cent by weight of combined fluorines in the solution. The acid is preferably nitric but may be sulphuric or hydrochloric, the chromic acid salt may be sodium bichromate and the fluoride may be sodium fluoride or ammonium bifluoride. The alloy may also contain manganese, silicion, zinc or silver; for instance: 10 per cent Al, 0.5 per cent Si, 0.1 per cent Mn, remainder Mg; 9 per cent Al, 2.0 per cent Zn, 0.1 per cent Mn, remainder Mg.
