Abstract

1,141,837. Setting hair. REALISTIC CO. 3 May, 1966, No. 19333/66. Heading D1P. Hair is permanently set by a process which comprises treating it first with a solution of a reducing agent for keratin and then with an aqueous solution of an oxidizing agent for reduced keratin which contains at least 18% by weight of a water soluble non-toxic salt of magnesium, aluminium or calcium. The solution of the reducing agent may be an aqueous solution contaimng 7% by weight of thioglycollic acid and sufficient ammonia to provide an excess and give a pH of 9.4. The oxidising agent may be an ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metalbromate, iodate or periodate, suitable agents being sodium bromate, sodium periodate or magnesium or calcium bromate or iodate, aluminium bromate or iodate, hydrogen peroxide or urea peroxide and the salt may be magnesium sulphate, aluminium sulphate, calcium acetate or calcium chlorate. The solution of the oxidizing agent may also contain sodium lauryl ether sulphate, sodium alkyl phenoxyether sulphonate, sulphuric acid or boric acid.
