Abstract
1399111 Desmutting aluminium DIVERSEY DEVELOPMENT Ltd 3 April 1973 [25 May 1972] 24686/72 Heading C7E A composition for desmutting Al or Al alloys comprises (1) at least one persulphate of NH 4 , alkali metal, or alkaline earth metal (2) at least one inorganic acid and/or acid salt and (3) at least one soluble nitrate or nitrate-producing species. Compound (1) is preferably (NH4)2 S 2 O 8 , in amount 1 g/l to saturation, (2) may be H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , acid salts thereof or HNO 3 , and (3) is present in amount # 15% the amount of (1). A preferred composition contains (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 , NaHSO 4 , and NaNO 3 in wt. ratio 1: 2.5 - 3.5: 0.5 - 1.5. The composition when in solid form may include MgCO 3 to improve the free flowing characteristics; the solid composition may be in a two-part pack containing (A) acid salt and persulphate in ratio 8:1 and (B) persulphate and nitrate in ratio 1:1 2 parts A and 1 part B being dissolved in water. The bath may also contain a source of F, e.g. Na 2 SiF 6 , and a wetting agent. A1 or Al alloy is desmutted by immersion for 0.1-1 min. at ambient temperature or above; the content of alkali metal ion in the bath may be maintained below 12 g/l to minimize ethching of - the A1.
