Abstract

1318297 Blackening composition OXFORD CHEMICAL CORP 21 Aug 1970 [9 Sept 1969] 40324/70 Heading C7U A blackening composition for ferrous articles consists of (i) an alkali metal hydroxide, 32-55 weight per cent (2) an alkali metal nitrite, 1-8%, (3) an alkali metal nitrate, 0À5-6%, (4) iron sequestrant, 0À05-10% and water, balance to make 100%. The sequestrant may be mono-, di-or triethanolamine, sodium gluconate or heptagluconate, sodium nitriloacetate or sorbitol. A solid composition dilutable in water to give the above bath contains ingredients (1) to (4) in the relative proportions specified, and a spent blackening bath which contained 32-55% NaOH, 1-8% NaNO 2 and 0À5-6% Na NO 3 in water may be regenerated by adding 0À05 to 10% of one or more of the above sequestrants.
