Abstract

Coating. - Metal coatings on articles of aluminium or aluminium alloys are obtained by immersing the articles in a hot alkaline bath containing salts, other than the cyanides or fluorides, of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, manganese, iron, chromium, lead, bismuth, silver, gold or tin and in addition potassium carbonate and bicarbonate alone or mixed with the corresponding salts of sodium. Water-soluble oxygen, liberating compounds such as a soluble chromate and glycerine may be added to the bath. In an example 25 gms. of copper sulphate, 25 gms. of potassium carbonate, 25 gms. of sodium bicarbonate and 10 gms. of potassium bichromate are dissolved in 2.5 litres of water. Instead of the potassium bichromate up to 25 gms. of a 3 per cent solution of hydrogen peroxide may be used. Mixed coatings may be obtained by using salts of the desired metals in the bath.
