Abstract

1437689 Hydrogen O ISHIZAKA 8 Feb 1974 05905/74 Heading C1A A method for generating hydrogen comprises reacting metallic zinc with an aqeuous solution of ammonium hydroxide and/or an ammonium salt of an inorganic acid in the presence of a metal (other than zinc) or a compound thereof which is capable of forming an ammine complex. The ammonium salt may be (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 or NH 4 Cl or a mixture thereof. The metal capable of forming an ammine complex may be cobalt (II), iron (II), aluminium (III), copper (I) or (II) or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The zinc may be coated with a film of the other metal. The rate of hydrogen generation may be controlled by varying the concentration of the ammonium hydroxide and/or ammonium salt and/or by variation of the contact area between the metallic zinc and the reaction medium. The reaction is preferably carried out between 10‹ and 40‹ C. The reaction medium suitably contains 10-20% by weight of NH 4 OH and/or ammonium salt. The metal is preferably located out of direct contact with the metallic zinc. The reaction medium may contain two or more of the ammine complex forming metals. The ammine complex may be formed first and then poured over the metallic zinc or alternately zinc grains are placed in a porous vessel in a bath of the aqueous solution and the metal is introduced into the solution in the form of a powder or, preferably, a wire.
