Abstract

A tin-bismuth alloy having a high resistance to tin pest is cathodically deposited on a basis metal from an aqueous bath containing alkali metal stannate, free alkali metal hydroxide, and a hydroxyalkyl bismuthate, preferably in a concentration representing 0.05 to 1.5 g/l Bi. Preferably the alkali metal employed is potassium. The hydroxyalkyl bismuthate may be any of those formed by reacting equimolecular proportions of sodium bismuthate and ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, erythritol, arabitol, sorbitol, dulcitol, mannitol, or the diol, triol, pentanol, or hexol of cyclohexane. Plating is effected with a C.D. of 1 to 40 amp./dm2 at 60 DEG C. to the bath boiling point, e.g. 105 DEG C., using insoluble or soluble e.g. tin or Sn-Al alloy anodes. With insoluble anodes the bath composition may be maintained by adding a composition comprising the bismuthate and an alkaline oxide tin sol as in Specification 1,109,676. The binary alloy deposit typically contains 0.1 to 0.6% by weight bismuth. Basis metals coated are steel, brass, bronze or copper, e.g. pipe or coupling threads or copper wire.ALSO:A hydroxy alkyl bismuthate is prepared by slowly adding with stirring to a polyhydric alcohol (optionally in sufficient water to effect solution) an equimolecular proportion of an alkali metal bismuthate, e.g. sodium bismuthate, and maintaining the temperature in the range 55 DEG to 80 DEG C. The reaction mixture is allowed to cool, the resulting free sodium hydroxide is neutralized with specified organic acids, and the mixture is then poured into ethyl alcohol when the bismuth compound forms a dense flocculent precipitate. After filtration the precipitate is redissolved in water and again precipitated with ethyl alcohol and this treatment is repeated. After drying at 100 DEG C. a heavy powder formed of transparent amber or brown scales is obtained. Typical polyhydric alcohols employed are ethylene or propylene glycol, glycerol, erythritol, arabitol, sorbitol, dulcitol, mannitol, or the diol triol, pentol, or hexol of cyclohexane. Dihydroxypropyl-, trihydroxybutyl -, pentahydroxyhexyl - and pentahydroxycyclohexyl-bismuthate esters are described.
