Abstract
Oxide scale is removed from metals resistant to alkali by immersion in a fused salt bath of which sodium flouride and sodium carbonate constitute at least 90 per cent. by weight and the ratio thereof is between 4 : 1 and 1 : 4. The bath preferably consists solely of sodium fluoride and sodium carbonate but may contain up to 5 per cent. in all of alkali metal chlorides and hydroxides, up to 2 per cent. of barium chloride and up to 2 per cent. of fluorspar and cryolite. The bath may be used at 1500-2000 DEG F. In an example, an alloy of Cu 30 per cent., Mn 1 per cent. Fe 1.4 per cent., Ni remainder is immersed in a salt bath consisting of 50 per cent. each of sodium flouride and sodium carbonate, dipped in dilute sulphuric acid and then dipped in a pickling solution containing 95 gns. per litre sulphuric acid, 65 gns. per litre sodium nitrate, 110 gns. per litre sodium chloride and 30 gns. per litre cupric chloride.
