Abstract

Before coating with aluminium or aluminium-base alloy by hot-dipping, a ferrous metal base is coated with a non-ferrous metal having a solubility in liquid aluminium not exceeding 8% by weight at 700 DEG C. (i.e. Cr, Ni, Pb, Ti, Mo, Be, Bi, Co, Mn, Sb, W, Zr) by chemical or electrolytic deposition from a fused bath consisting of ammonium chloride, at least one of the chlorides of Zn, Na, K, Li, Ca, Mg and Ba, and the chloride of the metal to be deposited. In the preferred sequence of operations, the base (which may be predominantly ferrous, e.g., steel, or may be an alloy in which iron is present in a minor amount) is (a) coated in a fused bath typically based on zinc chloride and containing p ammonium chloride, the triple eutectic of sodium, potassium and lithium chlorides and the chloride of the metal to be deposited in an amount of 0,2-3,0%, (b) optionally provided with a lead coating by hot-dipping, the lead being eventually displaced by the aluminium coating, (c) cleaned of heavy metal salts by dipping in a fused bath consisting of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorides and optionally containing fluoride, and (d) dipped in a bath of aluminium-silicon alloy. The fused bath used for cleaning may contain at its bottom a layer of Na, Ca, Mg or Al. The aluminium bath may be provided with a top flux of the same composition as the cleaning bath.
