Abstract

A flux for use in galvanizing consists of zinc oxide and one or more chlorides to which may be added one or more of the following : metallic zinc, zinc-aluminium alloy, other metal oxides, and fluorides. Examples of fluxes are (a) zinc oxide and 97 per cent of zinc-ammonium chloride; (b) zinc oxide, aluminium oxide, metallic zinc or zinc-aluminium alloy, and 82 per cent of ammonium chloride; and (c) zinc oxide, aluminium oxide, iron oxide, lead oxide, stannic oxide, cadmium oxide, bismuth oxide, metallic zinc or zinc-aluminium alloy, potassium fluoride, sodium aluminium chloride, and 88,9 per cent of ammonium chloride. Tungsten oxide and beryllium oxide are also specifically referred to. The flux may be dusted on to the articles before they are immersed in the zinc bath and it may be used for cleaning the delivery rollers in the bath. Fluxes containing fluorides or alkali or alkali-aluminium chlorides may be used with zinc baths containing aluminium. The flux may be used on the surface of the molten lead in the lead-zinc process.
