Abstract

673,016. Coating with metals; fluxes; cleaning metals. WESTBY, T. H. Dec. 6, 1949, No. 31333/49. Class 82(ii) Prior to coating by dipping in molten aluminium, articles are passed through or immersed in a molten salt mixture consisting of 70-89 per cent zinc chloride, 10-29 per cent sodium chloride and 0.25-1 per cent lead chloride, preferably at 400-500‹C. The aluminium bath may be covered with a layer of reducing material, e.g. small pieces of graphite. A steel wire W is passed twice through the furnace 1, through an acid bath 7, salt bath 10, wiper 11, aluminium bath 14 and water bath 19. In the bath 14 is a frame 15 in which the salt is removed. After passing through the bath 19, the wire may be polished by contact with a hard steel wire 22 coiled round the wire.
