Abstract

626,239. Cleaning by electrolysis. BRITTON, ,J. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 21, 1947, No. 7793. [Class 41] Stains and coatings are removed from the surface of iron and steel articles by immersing them in an alkali metal cyanide solution, e.g. in concentrations of from 1 to 10 per cent and preferably from 4 to 6 per cent by weight of the cyanide at a temperature of from 10‹ to 70‹ C. and preferably from 45‹ to 55‹ C., in which metallic zinc or aluminium or an alloy of zinc or aluminium is also immersed while electrical contact is maintained between the articles and the metal or alloy specified. The electrical contact between the article and the metal in the solution may be made externally, e.g. by means of a wire conductor or internally by allowing the metal article to touch each other under the surface of the solution. The metal may be in rod, sheet or granulated or powdered form and in the latter case the mixture of metallic powder and solution must be stirred. Several examples are given employing sodium cyanide solutions and metallic zinc.
