Abstract

579,246. Hydrogen. BRITISH NON-FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, SMITH, E. M. D., BAKER, W. A., and LIDDIARD, E. A. G. July 8, 1943, No. 11120. [Class 90] [Also in Group II] Hydrogen is obtained by alloying or mixing magnesium with iron,.copper or nickel, or mixing magnesium with a salt or oxide of such metal, and bringing such alloy or mixture into contact with water which may be rendered conductive by the addition of a salt or salts in solution. The comminuted ingredients of the mixture may be compressed or worked into pellets or the like. The mixture may also contain a soluble, non-hygroscopic chloride, such as ammonium chloride to increase the reaction rate if relatively pure water is employed. Suitable alloys contain 15 per cent. copper and 85 per cent. magnesium or 20 per cent. nickel and 80 per cent. magnesium The alloying of iron with magnesium must be assisted by the introduction of a further alloying element, e.g., silicon. A preferred mixture is powdered magnesium with powdered iron or iron oxide, with or without ammonium chloride. The hydrogen may be produced in a generator of the acetylene type. Alternatively, a cylinder with an open bottom, a grid or construction for supporting the pellets and a controlled outlet for the gas may be employed. This generator is immersed in water, the level of which falls in the cylinder to below the level of the grid when the gas outlet is closed.
