Abstract
Magnesium is added to molten metals, having a temperature above the boiling point of magnesium, in the form of a briquette provided with a hole in which a rod is fastened by means of which the briquette is forcibly submerged in the metal. The briquette has a content of magnesium that will evaporate progressively over a desired period of time this period being governed either by the content of magnesium, which may be present as metal or as an alloy or intermetallic compound, or by mixing the magnesium containing powder with a powdered carrier which is of such a nature that it will not be reduced by the action of magnesium, e.g. metals or alloys such as ferrosilicon which will dissolve in the melt, coke or dead burnt magnesium oxide. The magnesium may be used in the form of nickel-magnesium, copper-magnesium or magnesium silicide to which some misch-metal may be added. The addition of magnesium to cast iron to produce spheroidal graphitic cast iron is referred to.
