Abstract

Alloys of beryllium with heavy metals, for example copper, nickel or iron, are produced by the thermal reduction of beryllium compounds in the molten heavy metal by means of magnesium or a magnesium alloy, for example an alloy containing 40-60 per cent of aluminium. A mixture of the beryllium compound and reducing agent, preferably briquetted, is introduced into the heavy metal, or the beryllium compound is stirred into a melt consisting of an alloy of the heavy metal and magnesium, preferably under a flux. Excess of the reducing agent is removed by heating the melt to vaporize the magnesium. The reduction may take place in an atmosphere of hydrogen.
