Abstract

A method of producing spheroidal graphite cast iron by means of magnesium in spite of the presence of detrimental elements comprises adding to the melt sufficient magnesium to produce a predominant amount of spheroidal graphite in the absence of detrimental elements and also a rare earth metal in amount between 0.005 and 0.02 per cent by weight of the molten iron. The rare earth metal may be added as mischmetall before, after, or with, the magnesium. The magnesium and the rare earth metal may be added together by the use of a perforated container holding magnesium in the form of chips not more than 0.06 inch in thickness and the rare earth metal, and plunging the container below the surface of the molten cast iron. An alloy of magnesium and the rare earth metal may be used. It is stated that 90 per cent of the graphite may be obtained in the spheroidal condition in the presence of lead, bismuth, thallium, or titanium. Specification 630,070 is referred to.
