Abstract

533,264. Alloys. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd. Oct. 25, 1939, No. 28687. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1938. [Class 82 (i)] In making alloys of magnesium with another metal, particularly zirconium, by a method in which the metal is introduced by means of a compound reducible by magnesium and volatile at the temperature of operation, such as zirconium chloride, the compound is added to the magnesium in the form of compressed pieces of such a density, not less than 2 and preferably about 2.3, that they readily sink in the molten magnesium. The introduction. is preferably effected without stirring. Materials such as calcium fluoride, with or without magnesium fluoride, which have a thickening effect on the resulting magnesium chloride may either be added to the molten magnesium or incorporated in the compressed pieces. The production of a magnesium alloy containing 1 per cent. of zirconium is referred to.
