Abstract

Carbon is distributed evenly in light metals or alloys by introducing it therein admixed with a metal compound such as a salt which is decomposed. The carbon may be omitted if the salt is such as to give carbon on decomposition. Or the salt may be omitted and a mixture of a metal and graphite in a state of colloidal fineness introduced into a melt of the light metal. For example, graphite is mixed into a solution of lead acetate dried, and introduced into a molten aluminium alloy. The lead acetate decomposes leaving the graphite, together with carbon resulting from the decomposition, finely distributed in the alloy. Specification 432,278 is referred to.
