Abstract

517,365. Refining metals. SOC. D'ELECTRO-CHIMIE, D'ELECTRO-METALLURGIE, ET DES ACIERIES ELECTRIQUES D' UGINE. March 15, 1938, No. 8040. Convention date, March 16, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (i)] Molten metal containing impurities is treated, without the application of external heat, with a solid reagent which is of less density than the metal, is insoluble therein, and does not melt at the temperature of the reaction, by introducing the metal and reagent into a container and rocking or rotating the container so that the whole of the metal and reagent are repeatedly and violently poured together and the reagent is distributed throughout the metal. The apparatus may comprise two chambers placed mouth to mouth and mounted on an axis. If the reaction is such as to form a gaseous or volatile product, the speed of the reaction may be regulated by slowing down the apparatus or by introducing the reagent in regulated proportions or in a less divided.form. The process may be applied to the deoxidation of copper by carbon, for example, wood charcoal. Specifications 297,759, 303,094, [both in Class 82 (i)], 517,366, and 517,367, are referred to.
