Abstract
In a process for producing magnesium, and like metals which sublime, from their ores or compounds, the ore in subdivided form is mixed with an iron alloy carbide, the latter being heated by high-frequency currents to the temperature at which the reduction of the ore and the distillation of the metal takes place, the reaction being carried in a continuously evacuated container, the pressure in the latter being maintained below the dissociation temperature of the ore being treated. When the alloy carbide used is ferro-chromium having a high carbon content, e.g. of the order of 10 per cent, a decarburized ferro-chromium is also produced. The pressure in the container is not above 2 mm. In an example, chrome ores containing an appreciable percentage of magnesium oxide are mixed with ferro-chromium alloy having a higher carbon content and treated, magnesium and a low-carbon ferro-chromium alloy is produced. Other alloys such as ferro-manganese may be used as reducing agents. The process is carried out in the apparatus described in Specification 466,763.
