Abstract
In a process for treating molten aluminium and its alloys prior to casting, the metal is agitated by any suitable means while maintained in an atmosphere free from hydrogen, water vapour or other hydrogen gas supplied to the space above the metal, the surface of the metal &c. being simultaneously treated with a flux capable of dissolving any oxide present or formed during the process. The atmosphere may consist of dry nitrogen, carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide and a flux used consists of a mixture of 50 parts of potassium chloride, 40 parts of sodium chloride and 10 parts of sodium fluoride. The agitation may be effected by mechanical stirring or by treatment in a high frequency furnace. One example of an alloy contains 4 per cent of copper, 2 of nickel, 1,5 of magnesium and the balance aluminium.
