Abstract
A welding rod consists of a steel alloy having a carbon content not substantially above about 0,5 per cent and from 1 to 10 per cent of titanium or zirconium or both, the sum total of the iron and titanium and/or zirconium being not less than 90 per cent. The titanium &c. content is preferably from 1 to 4 per cent and the carbon between 0,1 and 0,2 per cent or less. The alloy may contain reducing agents such as manganese, aluminium and silicon, from 0,2-4 per cent of silicon being used. Suitable alloys are: a ferro alloy containing either 2,1 per cent of titanium, 2,9 per cent of silicon, 0,35 per cent of aluminium and 0,23 per cent of carbon, or 0,6 per cent of zirconium, 2,8 per cent of silicon, 0,15 per cent of aluminium, 0,6 per cent of titanium and 0,05 per cent of carbon. The alloy may be produced by the alumino thermio process or by adding an alloy high or titanium or zirconium to a steel produced in electric or open hearth furnaces or in a crucible.
