Abstract
Primary materials, ores, and metallurgical bye-products containing tantalum and niobium in oxide form and which may contain other elements such as titanium in oxide form, are reduced with an amount of calcium alone or calcium and aluminium conjointly in metallic form or as alloys with tantalum and/or niobium which amount is insufficient completely to reduce both the tantalum and niobium to obtain an alloy having a higher niobium: tantalum ratio than the primary material and a slag having a higher tantalum: niobium ratio than the primary material. The slag obtained may be treated with calcium and/or aluminium or an alloy of tantalum with calcium and/or aluminium. An induction furnace, arc furnace, radiating furnace, crucible furnace or flame furnace may be employed. A metal or metals, such as iron, may be added to produce an alloy. Specific examples refer to the production of alloys containing tantalum, niobium, iron, manganese, silicon; tantalum, niobium, iron, titanium, silicon, calcium; tantalum, niobium, iron, manganese, silicon, aluminium; tantalum, niobium, iron, silicon, aluminium. An alloy containing 25 per cent of calcium and 75 per cent of aluminium is referred to as a reducing-agent. Specification 467,483 is referred to.
