Abstract

568,315. Metals and alloys. ADELINE, P. April 3, 1941, No. 4486. [Class 82 (i)] In the reduction of the silicon content of a metal or alloy by a method of the kind in which the molten material is treated with one or more oxides of the metal or of a metal of the alloy, the -oxide or mixture of oxides is preheated to 1200‹ C. or higher before being mixed with the molten material. The preheating may be effected by exothermic reaction, for example, by placing part of the oxide or oxides at the bottom of the crucible or ladle, superposing a mixture of the other part with aluminium, and pouring the molten metal or alloy thereon, with or without previous ignition of the mixture. Lime may be present in amount sufficient to remove some, but not all, of the silicon. The method may be applied to the treatment of ferro-manganese, an alloy consisting of 40 per cent of manganese, 40 per cent of chromium, and 20 per cent of iron, and generally in the manufacture of such metals as manganese, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, nickel, titanium, vanadium, zirconium, tantalum and their alloys. Specification 568,314 is referred to.
