Abstract
576,133. Alloys. UDY, M. J. Jan 27, 1943, No. 1414. Convention da,te, July 9, 1942. [Class 82 (i)] Alloy irons and steels are produced by igniting in contact with molten iron or steel an exothermic reaction mixture consisting of iron, one or more of the readily oxidisable elements, chromium, manganese, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, and zirconium, silicon and sodium nitrate, the two latter materials being present in the proportions by weight equivalent to not more than 2.5 parts of sodium nitrate to 1 part of silicon, and in amounts capable of generating sufficient heat to melt the iron and the alloying elements. The latter may be employed in the form of a ferro-alloy free from silicon or in the form of a ferro-alloy containing all or part of the silicon required, and any silicon then required may be in the form of ferro-silicon. Preferably the ratio of the sodium nitrate and silicon is 2.42 to 1. Specifications 544,553, 545,418, 547,456, 548,830 and 552,312 are referred to.
