[Class 82 (i)] A low-carbon iron-chromium alloy containing also niobium or tantalum or both is made by the reaction of an oxide compound or ore of chromium and a silicon-containing alloy of niobium or tantalum or both, or of an oxide compound or ore of niobium or tantalum or both and a. silicon-containing alloy of chromium. The silicon-containing alloy may be a ferro-alloy and the compound to be reduced may also contain iron. Part of the silicon may be added as free silicon. A mixture of the oxide compound and the silicon alloy may be fed to a slagcovered bath of iron or steel for the production of an alloy steel. Some manganese may be present in the product.
