Abstract

529,463. Alloys. ELECTRO METALLURGICAL CO. June 1, 1939, No. 16102. Convention date, July 1, 1938. [Class 82 (i)] An iron-chromium alloy containing niobium or tantalum or both, particularly for incorporation in molten metal baths such as for the manufacture of steel, contains at least 50 per cent. of chromium, niobium, and tantalum together, and at least 20 per cent. of either chromium or of niobium and tantalum, the ratio of niobium and tantalum to chromium is between 20: 1 and 1: 20, the silicon is less than 20 per cent., and the carbon less than 1 per cent. A specific example consists of iron with 35 per cent. of chromium, 35 per cent. of niobium, 6 per cent. of silicon, and 0.2 per cent. of carbon. In other examples, some titanium may be present. All or part of the silicon may be replaced by aluminium, and part of the iron by manganese or nickel or both. The alloys may be made by melting the constituents, using low-carbon ferrochromium and low-carbon ferroniobium, or by the simultaneous reduction of ores of chromium and niobium with carbon, silicon, or aluminium, or by the method described in Specification 529,504.
