Abstract

556,770. Alloys. STEVENS. A. H. (Vanadium Corporation of America.) Sept. 20, 1941, No. 12200. [Class 82 (i)] Deep-hardening properties are imparted to steels containing 0.1-1 per cent of carbon, with or without less than 5 per cent. of alloying constituents, by adding to the killed molten steel 0.01-0.2 per cent; of titanium, beryllium, boron, or thorium, the addition being made in the form of an alloy containing carbon not more than one eighth of the titanium &c., with or without aluminuim, zirconuim, or magnesium not more than 3 times the titanium &c., and with or without other elements such as up to 5 per cent. of vanadium, niobrium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten, or uranium, the remainder of the alloy being one or more metals such as iron, manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper, or chromium, with or without silicon preferably less than 60 per cent of the titanium &c. An example of an addition alloy is iron with 25 per cent. of vanadium, 15 per cent. of titanium, 10 per cent. of aluminium, 2 per cent. of silicon, and 0.5 per cent. of manganese.
