Abstract

519,572. Alloys. INLAND STEEL CO. June 27, 1938, Nos. 19010 and 19011. Convention dates, Nov. 30, 1937, and May 14, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (i)] Iron and iron alloys containing not more than 1À7 per cent. of carbon contain also 0À03- 0À478 per cent. of lead in a state of dispersion throughout the metal, the products being stated to have improved machinability. There may also be present up to 0À5 per cent. of sulphur, and one or more of the following elements : manganese, silicon, nitrogen, phosphorus, nickel, copper, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, zirconium, titanium, tantalum, aluminium, and niobium ; or the alloy may be a stainless steel. The lead may be added as metallic lead, litharge, galena, lead sulphide, orthophosphate, or other lead compound, a lead-tin-antimony alloy, a lead-tin alloy, or a copper-lead-tin alloy. Preferably the lead is added to the molten steel in the ingot mould in sub-divided form after a small amount of steel is in the mould, a stream of lead particles being delivered against the stream of steel entering the mould. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes also the subject-matter of Specification 519,615. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
