Abstract

523,251. Alloys. INLAND STEEL CO. Nov. 29, 1938, Nos. 34757, 34758 and 34759. Convention dates, Nov. 30, 1937, May 14, 1938, and Oct. 28, 1938. [Class 82 (i)] Austenitic steel alloys containing not more than 0À7 per cent. of carbon contain also 0À03 - 1 per cent. of lead in a state of dispersion throughout the metal, the products being stated to have improved machinability. Austenitic steel alloys containing the following metals are referred to (1) 5 - 44 per cent. of nickel'; (2) 10 - 20 per cent. of manganese; (3) 5 - 44 per cent. of nickel and 10 - 20 per cent. of manganese; (4) 1 - 28' per cent. of chromium, 1 - 44 per cent. of nickel, and 1 - 2 per cent. of manganese ; (5) 5 - 28 per cent. of chromium and 5 - 44 per cent. of nickel ; (6) 5 - 28 per cent. of chromium together with nickel or manganese or both. There may also be present up to 0À5 per cent. of sulphur, up to 0À5 per cent. of phosphorus and one or more of the following elements : titanium, cobalt, copper, tungsten, molybdenum, silicon, vanadium, niobium and aluminium. Preferably the lead is added to the molten steel in the ingot mould in subdivided form after a small amount of steel is in the mould, a stream of lead particles being delivered against the stream of steel entering the mould. Specification 519,572 is referred to.
