Abstract
504,371. Alloys ; heat - treatment. ELECTRO METALLURGICAL CO. July 30, 1937, No. 20026. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Magnetizable silicon steel sheets are produced by forging or hot rolling, or both, a steel containing 5À5-7 per cent of silicon and 0À2-0À5 per cent of carbon, holding the sheet at 650- 1050‹ C. for 2-20 hours, cooling, punching or otherwise shearing the sheet, reheating to 1000-1200‹ C. and slowly cooling. The steel may also contain 0À3-2 per cent in all of one or more of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper ; 0À05-0À15 per cent of silver ; up to 1 per cent in all of one or more of beryllium, boron, calcium and zirconium; not over 4 per cent of aluminium ; up to 1 per cent in all of one or more of chromium, titanium, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, niobium, and tantalum. The steel may be forged or rolled, or both, at 900-1150‹C. and the finishing temperature of thin sheet may be 700‹ C. although a temperature of below 500‹ C. may be employed. The heat treatments may be carried out in air or in an inert or reducing atmosphere, e.g. in hydrogen or in a hydrogennitrogen mixture. Specific compositions of steels as above and of steels with differing carbon and silicon contents are given.
