Abstract

544,439. Heat-treating aluminium alloys. ALUMINUM CO. OF AMERICA. May 3, 1940, No: 8005. Convention date, July 12, 1939. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Aluminium base alloys containing zinc, magnesium, copper and manganese and particularly alloys containing 3-10 per cent. of zinc, 0.75-4.0 of magnesium, 0.5-3.0 copper and 0.1-1.5 of manganese are heat-treated by heating to 850-1000‹F. for five minutes to ten hours, quenching the alloy at a relatively slow rate, e.g., by a high velocity air blast, ageing at 200-250‹F. for 2-30 hours and subsequently re-heating at 350- 450‹F. for 15 minutes to two hours. The alloys may also contain up to 0.25 per cent. of titanium, vanadium, cobalt, tungsten, niobium and tantalum and zirconium and chromium up to 0.5 per cent., the total amount of all such additional elements being not more than 0.5 per cent. Up to 0.2 per cent. of silicon and 0.2-0.5 of iron may also be present. Specification 476,930 is referred to.
