Abstract
An aluminium base alloy of composition:- .Zn.2 to 9%, .Mg.0.5 to 3%, .Mn.0 to 1.5%, .Cr.0 to 0.5%, .Ti.0 to 0.5%, .Si.0 to 1%, .Fe.0 to 1%, .Zr.0 to 0.5%, .Cu.0 to 3%, .Cd.0.005 to 0.5%, Al and impurities as balance, is hardened e.g. by heating at 425 DEG C. for 2 hours and quenching or air-cooling, and tempered (artifically aged) at 100 to 180 DEG C. for 6 to 48 hours. A comparative alloy is specified consisting of 3.5% Zn, 2% Mg, 0.3% Mn, 0.15% Cr, 0.2% Fe, 0.2% Ti, 0.05% Si and 93.6% Al, which is modified by adding 0.05% Cd.
