Abstract
572,672. Heat - treating aluminium alloys. BRADBURY, T. F. Aug. 21, 1941, No. 10676. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] The quality of cast aluminium alloys containing 0.5-1.9 per cent of copper, 0.1-1.7 of magnesium, 0.5-2.0 of nickel, 0.01-2.0 of iron, 0.02-2.0 of silicon, 0-0.5 of titanium and 0-1.5 of manganese and the balance aluminium is improved by maintaining the alloys at not more than 30‹ C. below their burning temperature for a time exceeding 4. hours, but not 30 hours, quenching and then ageing at normal temperatures or up to 200‹ C. The alloys may also contain up to 0.23 per cent of one or more of boron, beryllium, niobium, tantalum or zirconium or up to 0.40 per cent if more than one of these elements is present. The alloys may be used for the manufacture of airscrew blades and parts of internal-combustion engines. The treatment of a particular alloy for 10 hours at 550‹ C. and for 10 hours at 165‹ C. for ageing is referred to.
