Abstract
512,244. Alloys ; annealing. SHEEPBRIDGE STOKES CENTRIFUGAL CASTINGS CO., Ltd., and STOKES, A. J. Feb. 26, 1938, No. 6162. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Machined castings such as cylinder liners, piston rings, and valve seat inserts for internal combustion engines are made from cast iron alloys containing 1.8-2.5 per cent. each of carbon and silicon, up to 1 per cent. of aluminium, and 15.5-20.5 per cent. of chromium with or without up to 1.5 per cent. of manganese and up to 1 per cent. of phosphorus. Sulphur may be present up to 0.12 per cent. as an impurity, and up to a total of 3 per cent. of molybdenum, nickel, zirconium, copper, tungsten, titanium, and vanadium, not exceeding 1 per cent. of each, may also be added. The casting is cooled, reheated to 950-990‹C., cooled to atmospheric temperature, machined, reheated for say 1 hour to 950-990‹C. and cooled quickly, and finally tempered by further heating to 570-700‹C.
